✍️ 👉 Dejan Lazić’s The Trout Pond offers a fresh perspective on Franz Schubert’s famous Trout Quintet. The composer-pianist draws upon motifs and allusions from Schubert’s song “Die Forelle” (“The Trout”), transforming them into a miniature lasting just under four minutes—a piece brimming with wit, virtuosity, and playful references.
The initials “F. SCH.” play a pivotal role, recurring as musical material and evolving through a variety of guises. Familiar elements shimmer into view, dissolve, and are recast in new contexts—sometimes playfully, at other times with virtuosic energy.
The Trout Pond was created in 2018 as part of a project initiated by pianist Silke Avenhaus, in which five contemporary composers developed new perspectives on Schubert’s Trout Quintet. Lazić’s contribution combines virtuosic piano writing with a keen sense for musical allusion, resulting in a tribute to Schubert that is as distinctive as it is entertaining.
